How scoring works

The Reading Level Check, explained

The Reading Level Check itself uses four question types — literal retrieval, vocabulary-in-context, inference, and main idea — pitched at each book's reading age, to establish an adaptive band quickly. After finishing a book, students then complete a separate six-domain VIPERS quiz (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval, Summarise), which builds a fuller comprehension profile over time. Scores combine into an overall band using a curve that mirrors the pattern seen in national reading assessments (KS2 SATs in the UK, SBAC/STAAR in the US) — small gains at the lower end reflect real jumps in confidence.

Text: a reading-age-appropriate book from your own library catalogue.

Question (Literal Retrieval): "How can you tell [character/animal] is [trait]?" — same requirement structure, same content-domain skill, applied to a book your students are actually reading.

Same question stem, same comprehension skill (Inference), same cognitive demand for the reading age band. Unlike SATs, LibraryAid questions are single multiple-choice items rather than multi-mark written responses — a deliberate trade-off for fast, low-stakes formative checks rather than a formal written exam. The variable text means your students are assessed on books they're actually reading, not a fixed national paper they'll never see again.

A worked example: how one student's blended level is calculated

No black box. Here's the actual formula LibraryAid runs — using a fictional student, Amara, in Year 5 (UK) / Grade 4 (US).

Standardised anchor score GL 9.4 (UK) or NWEA MAP RIT equivalent (US) — entered by the teacher. This is the fixed reference point every calculation starts from.
Current VIPERS level 10.6 — the reading level implied by Amara's most recent six-domain VIPERS quiz, completed after her last book.
RLC baseline 10.2 — Amara's rolling average performance level across her recent Reading Level Checks.

Notice that VIPERS performance is weighted twice as heavily as the RLC baseline (0.2 vs. 0.1) — a student's most recent comprehension check carries more signal than their rolling average. And because the adjustment is capped at ±1.0, no combination of RLC results can ever push a student's blended level more than one full reading age away from their standardised anchor score.

🔍 What if there's no standardised score yet?

If a student hasn't had a GL, PIRA, or NWEA MAP assessment entered, LibraryAid falls back to a straight blend: 60% RLC baseline + 40% current VIPERS level. As soon as a standardised score is entered, that becomes the anchor and the formula above takes over.
